Local volunteers walk beaches to collect trash, SCUBA divers collect debris from the ocean floor, and volunteers in boats collect floating debris, yielding staggering amounts of trash. There was growing concern over the toll taken on coastal fish stocks by long-distance fishing fleets and over the threat of pollution and wastes from transport ships and oil tankers carrying noxious cargoes that plied sea routes across the globe.

Some changes, such as increasing inputs of nitrogen to low-nutrient waters, or increasing acidity, could trigger changes in primary production that influence entire food chains including the production of fish, birds and mammals.

This suggests that the most effective means of prevention is from the primary source. Millions of motor vehicle engines drop small amounts of oil each day onto roads and parking lots.

Eutrophication

Plastic trash smaller than 5mm microplastic poses an additional threat because it adsorbs toxic chemicals, including DDT and PCBs, which can cause cancers, weaken the immune system and make animals more susceptible to diseases and other infections.

Phosphorus is often regarded as the main culprit in cases of eutrophication in lakes subjected to "point source" pollution from sewage pipes. It is the only global intergovernmental mechanism directly addressing the connectivity between terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems.

These chemicals do not get dissolved and sink at the bottom of the ocean. Evidence of biological effects is an obvious indicator of pollution but to date the techniques and opportunities available for recording biological impacts in the open ocean are limited.

Most debris, especially plastic debriscannot decompose and remains suspended in the oceans current for years. The success achieved in improving water quality in Western European rivers shows that the nutrient load can indeed be decreased in this way.

Humankind is still discharging millions of tonnes of problematical substances into the sea. A new study by the US National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis estimates that over 40 per cent of the world's oceans have been heavily affected by human land-based activities; only 4 per cent of ocean waters "remain relatively pristine".
